New Lotion is Like Botox But Without Needles!

How many different lotions do you have in your bathroom? I count 16 in mine, including 4 different kinds of sunscreen (which are getting a lot of use these days). As great as my lotions are, none pack the same punch as Botox, but someday that could change.

Anterios, Inc. (New York) has a new product similar to Botox  in the midst of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) medicine-approval process. “ANT-1207” is a Botox-ish skin lotion that takes just 5-10 minutes to apply in a physician’s office, where it’s massaged into the skin by a doctor (or perhaps a physician’s assistant or nurse) wearing gloves. The lotion is currently being tested as a treatment for sweaty armpits (underarm hyperhidrosis or axillary hyperhidrosis), wrinkles, acne, and other conditions for which OnabotulinumtoxinA injections (Botox®) are already FDA-approved. In studies so far, involving 500 volunteers, ANT-1207 has been shown to work as an excessive sweating treatment, with results lasting for six months.

According to Anterios’ President and CEO Jon Edelson, M.D., the easy in-office application of ANT-1207 could improve botulinum’s “accessibility and acceptance” as a hyperhidrosis treatment because it’s “comfortable and convenient” for both patients and doctors. Edelson says a botulinum skin lotion could represent “great improvement in the treatment of hyperhidrosis,” largely because current forms have the “drawback” of injections, which Edelson says are “time-consuming” for the physician and “uncomfortable” for the patient. Currently the product is being studied for the treatment of only underarm hyperhidrosis, but it may have potential uses for other sweaty body areas in the future says Edelson. “We’d need to do studies to demonstrate that,” says Edelson, “and we don’t want to put the cart before the horse.”

Of course, the process of getting a new medicine approved by the FDA for general use by doctors takes a long time. This new anti-sweating, anti-wrinkle, and anti-acne Botox-like skin lotion could still be years away from being available from your local dermatologist.

But don’t worry, in the meantime, if you need to stop sweating NOW there’s already a great selection of treatments to choose from that are FDA-ok’d and proven to work. These include:

Watch your e-mail for future updates on ANT-1207 and other new treatments for excessive sweating, and give yourself a monthly reminder to check for new clinical research trials to help review innovative treatments. Hint: there's one opening very soon!!

When the International Hyperhidrosis Society was founded in 2003, there were only a handful of potential treatments for the largely misunderstood, misdiagnosed, and often stigmatized condition of excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). In the last decade, so much exciting progress has been made to better the lives of those who live with too much sweat. We can’t wait to see what the next decade will bring! I better make space in my bathroom.
