Inserts Help Give Slippery Feet the Boot

(July/August 2005) For Karen of Philadelphia, PA, summer sandals and other open-shoe styles were never an option. Karen suffers from plantar hyperhidrosis and says "When your feet are wet or sweaty, like mine, you can't wear those cute open shoes -- you literally slide off them! It's really dangerous, not to mention embarassing. People used to stare at me because I looked funny when I walked. And in shoe stores, there were only one or two styles I could consider wearing. I'd do anything to feel normal."

This summer, however, has been different for Karen. She discovered peel-and-stick fabric shoe inserts for open shoe styles --like sandals, mules, and thongs. The inserts are called Summer Soles and since Karen started using them she hasn't been worried about sliding out of her shoes or about people staring at her. The inserts help to keep her feet feeling cooler, drier, and less slippery. "Even if you perspire," says Karen, "You don't slip. You could even dance in Summer Soles! I can now buy all types of shoes."

Summer Soles are an innovative new product from Dallas, Texas. Created by Shannon McLinden, Summer Soles are for the millions of women who suffer from sweaty feet, or experience "slippery discomfort" with leather or synthetic footwear. The shoe liners are made of wool, which is recommended by podiatrists because of its ability to absorb sweat, and rayon, which helps dissipate wetness so it can evaporate.

In the hyperhidrosis community as well as in the mainstream media Summer Soles have been generating a buzz. They've been featured on Entertainment Tonight and ABC's The View, and in the New York Daily News and New York Post. Canada's national newspaper, the Globeandmail, even voted Summer Soles one of the top ten products of the summer!

SummerSoles were originally only available for women, but due to demand the company will launch a men's line this month! The inserts come in a variety of colors and can be trimmed to fit any summer shoe.

The inserts have been tested by women with hyperhidrosis with good results but experiences may vary. Heavy sweaters may need to allow their inserts to air out between wearings and to replace their inserts more often.
